Sarah Jane and Maggie May produce best-ever displays to win regional golds

SARAH JANE COKER and Maggie May Shepherd produced their best-ever displays to become overall champions at a regional competition in Ipswich. 

Sarah Jane, ten, triumphed at Level 3 with a score of 48.40 and also won gold medals on vault, bars, beam and floor at the Regional Out Of Age Voluntary finals at Pipers Vale Gymnastics Club.

And Maggie May came out on top at Level 4 with a score of 47.10, and won gold on bars and floor and silvers on vault and beam at the event on the weekend of October 21-22.

Proud coach Caron Notton said: “Sarah won by four marks and smashed it on every piece, and Maggie won by two marks.

“That is quite an accomplishment as this was against some of the best kids at this level in the country.

“It was the best I have ever seen from them in competition and we could not have asked for more.”

The South Essex gymnasts had previously qualified through a county competition.

At Level 6, Lily Brice, eight, finished in silver medal position overall with a score of 44.35 and won a gold on vault and silver on bars.

Nancy Fiddes, eight, was fourth overall and claimed a bronze medal on floor.

Anabelle Baker was crowned overall Level 6 champion (age 11-and-over) with a score of 44.45, an won silver on vault, bars and beam.

Jasmine Carr was also competing in this age group and finished sixth overall, and won a gold on vault and a bronze on bars.

At Level 5, Grace Reed, nine. took the overall silver with a score 46.80, Scarlett Edge, nine, took bronze and Tia Basi, nine, was fourth.

Grace also won beam gold, bars silver and floor bronze; Scarlett won silver on vault, beam and floor; and Tia won gold on bars.

Caron added: “This was the conclusion of our season except for the teams competition, and it was a great way to finish.

“All of our girls were brilliant and got their rewards for lots of dedicated work in the gym.”
