ROY SHORT hailed another remarkable day for the club as droves of fans came to the Basildon Sporting Village to welcome home SEGC’s Rio Olympic heroes Max Whitlock and Brinn Bevan.
Well-wishers queued from inside the club’s main gym to outside the leisure complex’s main entrance and onto the fields outside on a warm Friday evening (August 26), to have the chance to meet the famous duo and get autographs.
National and local media outlets were again in attendance as Whitlock showed off his Olympic pommel and floor gold medals alongside Team GB team-mate Bevan and their coach Scott Hann.
Club chairman Short said: “It still amazes me the response we get – but I’m getting more used to it now.
“I was in a pub in Wiltshire and the locals knew exactly who Max was and that shows just how far reaching his popularity is now.
“And it was great for Scott and Brinn to get such a warm welcome back to the gym too, because they are heroes for our club too.
“The volume of people who came shows just how much interest we now have here at South Essex and hopefully by the winter we might have some news on how we can accommodate the growing demand for membership.”
