Limited spaces left for South Essex Gymnastics Club’s open trial in January

THERE are only limited spaces left for SEGC’s Men’s Artistic open trial next month – so hopefuls are advised to book now¬†to avoid disappointment.

As of this morning (December 18) 39 of the 50 spots available had been filled for the event between 3.30pm and 5pm on Sunday, January 6, 2019, at the Eversley Leisure Centre in Pitsea.

Aspiring male gymnasts aged between four and 12-years-old are invited to try the sport and stake a claim for places on one for three sections at the popular club.

There are places up for grabs on the Squad programme, for those aged seven to nine with identified elite potential, and on the Development squad, for those aged four to seven with skill and clear room for improvement.

The club also hopes to recruit for its Recreational section, which will offer two-hour classes in the club’s main gym, training under a top coach and competitions throughout the year.

SEGC’s Men’s Artistic Head Coach, Anthony Wise, hopes the trial could identify talent to complement all levels of the club – and perhaps unearth a future international star.

The club has a proud record of success with the likes of Olympic champion Max Whitlock (pictured) in its ranks, along with Jamaican star Reiss Beckford, British gymnasts Brinn Bevan, and national junior champion Danny Crouch, who is still only 13.

Anthony, who also competed at international level before switching his attention to coaching, said: “Gymnastics is a tough sport but to do it at any level – whether or not you end up becoming an Olympic champion or do it from the age of 12 and then move into a different sport – it opens up so many doors.

“If you go into something different, I think gymnastics is the best base you can have for any other sport. But of course if you go on to do great things in gymnastics then that is a bonus.

“I think it is the best sport in the world and I’d like to encourage as many kids as possible to do it.

“And a big reason I wanted to do this trial was because we have a huge waiting list here at the club, which is amazing because we are doing so well, but I think about how many talented kids we may be missing because they are on a two-year waiting list and not coming into the gym yet.

“So we hope this open trial might give a few of those talents a different route into the gym and we can start working with them straight away.”

To book a place at the trial email mensartistic@southessexgym.co.uk by the deadline of December 24, 2018.
