SEGC boys become national champions in Birmingham

By JAMES COLASANTI

SOUTH ESSEX boys had an amazing weekend at the artistic National Elite and Club Development Grades finals at the GMAC in Birmingham.

Gymnasts from the club were representing the East region and won team gold medals at Elite Level 1 and Club Level 4, and an Elite Level 2 bronze.

Adam Feakins and Josh Graham competed at Elite Level 2 and claimed a team bronze medal with solid all round performances.

Joe Waller finished 11th overall at Club Level 4 and Tylar Sandy equal seventh, helping the East to secure team gold. Frustratingly for Joe, in a tight competition, a fall on parallel bars cost him individual gold.

At Elite Level 4, reigning English and British champion Danny Crouch finished seventh overall after a slip on parallel bars.

It was part of an excellent year for Danny, who has also been a part of the Great Britain Elite Performance Squad.

And coach Anthony Wise’s ‘Mini Dream Team’ of George Atkins, Alfie Bartley and Jamie Langridge put in amazing performances across all eight pieces to secure team victory at Elite Level 1.

Jamie finished fourth overall, having scored a perfect ten on parallel bars and scoring highest on high bar.

George scored a perfect ten on vault and had a fantastic all-round competition to secure individual gold and be crowned national champion.

At at Level 3 club, Thomas Makhan had a great competition to finish an impressive 15th out of more than 60 boys, and was part of a team that finished fourth.

Anthony said: “Team gold is an incredible achievement, and also well done to George, Jamie and Alfie individually today  for some terrific performances.

“Jamie got fourth place but if it had not been for a mistake he would’ve finished second.

Alfie performed really well across all pieces and was a great team leader, and George became national champion.

“George’s first year of competition has been amazing with three big national competitions, three wins, and three targets achieved.”
