SOUTH ESSEX’S top gymnast Max Whitlock said he was proud to win a silver medal with Great Britain at the European Championships in Bulgaria.

Max produced stand-out routines on the floor and particularly the pommel – where he scored a whopping 16.200 – to help the team to a total score of 265.953 which was just short of Russia’s gold winning mark of 267.959.

It meant the GB team of Sam Oldham, Dan Keatings, Kristian Thomas, Dan Purvis and Max were unable to defend their title.

But afterwards Max tweeted to his army of Twitter followers that he was still very happy with the achievement.

He said: “Well done GB. Proud to be a part of such a strong team! Making it into a great competition and coming out with a silver medal.”

Max will now try to go one better than his silver when he competes for individual honours on the floor and pommel on Sunday. And he will be favourite for gold, having qualified top on both.
