MAX WHITLOCK put in a typically polished performance to help England into the lead of the team competition on the opening day of gymnastics competition at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
South Essex star Whitlock, 21, posted the best score on his specialist piece, the pommel horse, and on the floor to help England into top spot heading into the final day of the team competition on Tuesday.
Whitlock’s 15.733 saw him finish ahead of England team-mate Louis Smith (15.700) on the pommel horse and paves the way for a terrific individual final on that apparatus.
But first Whitlock and Smith, along with England team-mates Sam Oldham, Kristian Thomas and Nile Wilson, will look to secure the team gold on Tuesday.
